Don't do it...
Baby Sudafed before the flight. It opens up their ears and also makes them a little sleepy. Also, give them a pacifier during the ascent and descent because that will also help with keeping their ears open. That is usually why they cry.
whiskey was the cure for all infant ailments up until the last few decades. So why not give your son a little taste of the good ole days.
I sedate my dog during storms with doggie valium. Surely your pediatrician could recommend the same for your young son! :)
